蔵書調査班（？）では、あいまをみて熊楠が海外からの書籍購入に利用した古書目録の調査をてがけている。目録類は書庫一階の片隅にまとめて保管はされているが、未整理でこれが全体かどうかもまだ把握していない。前回調査までに、記号などの書き入れのあるものから適宜内容調査を行なったものの一覧は別掲のリストのとおり。まだ一部にすぎないが、ここで予備的な報告を行ないたい。
目録は45点、1888年に ニュー・ヨークの J・W・ブートンが発行した1点と、刊年の記載がない オランダの ニーホーフ書店目録を除き、いずれも1916年（大正 5年）から1937年（昭和12年）までに刊行されており、なかでも1910年代後半から1920年代前半にかけての約10年間に集中している。書店数は11（トマス・ソープ書店は、ギルドフォードとロンドンの 2箇所で営業していたようだが１店と数える）、合衆国、イギリス、フランス、オランダ、ドイツ にまたがっている。パリの ルシュヴァリエ書店、ベルリンの ユンク書店、ハーグの ニーホーフ書店はいずれも植物学ないしは博物学専門の古書肆である。
目録のいくつかには表紙に墨で「留置」ないしは「入用」と記載がある（リスト参照）。身辺において レファランスとして使用したか、あるいは以後の注文の参考用としたものであろう。また目録の内部には各項目の頭の位置にやはり墨で、◎：○：Ｖ：／：＼：注：次などの文字・記号が記入されている。「注」は注文、 「次」は次回注文予定の意か。その他の記号はそれぞれの目録のなかで使い分けられた形跡はあるが、すべての目録を通じて一貫した意図のもとに使用されているわけではない。その時どきの心覚えにさまざまに使い分けられたのであろう。ロンドンの フランシス・エドワーズ書店の目録 421号（1921年12月刊 文化人類学・民俗学・考古学特集)の第１ページに熊楠の手で、

− List I − とあるのはその例である。
この目録には全部で1149の収録点数のうち、116点に×、4点に◎が付されている。全体の10分の１にあたり、×の総額は 82ポンド13シリング、◎の総額は14ポンド5シリングにのぼる。これがすべて注文されたとすると、個人の注文としては点数も金額も異常に多いように思えるが、実はこの目録には熊楠の書込みにあった1922年 9月26日の フランシス・エドワーズ(Francis Edwards)宛注文書の下書きとおぼしきものが挿入されて保存されていた。（図版 1a〜d 参照）。注文は折り畳んだ書簡用箋に記され、以下の文章で始まっている。
'My Dear Sir, Inclosed please find Bank's Bill of Exchange amounting to £17 14s 6d, for which sum you will please send me the following books, which, [exept 1] I have chosen from your recently issued catalogues of yours, kindly, as usual, prepaying all the charges necessary for their safe transportation, which cost I shall repay to you soon after their arrival here.'
その後に 8件の書名があげられているが、これが List I で、目録 421号に◎を付された4件はいずれもここに含まれている。問題はそのあとで以下の通信がつづく。
'Each of these sets I wish most ardently to have. But, in case, some of them had been sold, you will please obligimely (sic, obligingly?) sending instead some of the other books, of which the title and your prices are given in the subjoined 2nd List II in such a manner as to make the amount of the accompanying remittance entirely, or as closely as possible, cover the sum total of the prices of all the books about to be sent.'
すなわち、リスト I にあげた本が売り切れていたときに備えて、第2の リストを用意しておくから、送金する 17ポンド 14シリング 6ペンスという金額をできる限り越えない範囲で適当な本を選んで（これも前年の目録からだから多くがすでに ソルド・アウトである公算が高い）送って欲しいということなのである。
List II は 2ページの途中から 4ページの最後までつづき、目録の記号とほぼ異同がない。（目録に記号があっ て注文書にないもの13点、目録に記号はないが注文書に書名があがっているもの6点）。そのすべてを送れというわけではないが、それにしても長大なリストで ある。
前記 フランシス・エドワーズ書店への注文書の翌日の日付（1922年 9月26日）をもつ、ロンドンの デュロー書店(Dulau & Co.)への注文書の、やはり下書きと思われるものが、デュロー書店目録第89号に挟まれて見つかった。これは前記のものとまったく同じ二つ折り用箋に 6ページ分、消去したものや書名がなくてアイテム・ナンバーだけを記したものもあって数えにくいが、目録の 83、88、89、90、94号の各号から合計93点を注文し、代金として 77ポンド 16シリングの為替を同封している。エドワーズへの送金よりもかなり多いし、当時のポンドの価値からいってもかなりの大金である。デュロー書店の目録はリストにも見られるとおり、いずれも植物学を中心とした生物学の分野に限定された特集形式をとっており、なかでも熊楠の注文は隠花植物のセクションからに集中している。
デュロー書店の目録の94号が 1922年 5月の発行であるから、それが到着したのを見て、ついでにフランシス・エドワーズ書店への注文を思いたち、前年の目録をひっぱりだしたということなのだろうか。おそらく上記の二つの日付が重要である。年譜によれば、1922年 9月の熊楠は、南方植物研究所設立にあたって寄金募集のために半年間東京に滞在し、ようやく田辺に帰還した直後である。奇妙なことに先の注文書 2通のうち、もっぱら人類学・民族学関係の書目を中心に注文したフランシス・エドワーズ書店へは、熊楠は 自分のアドレスを Minakata Botanical Institute, Tanabe,Kii, Japan と記したのに、もっぱら植物学書を注文したデュローに宛てては、ただ Tanabe, Kii, Japanとしか記していない。しかしいずれにしても、1921年 7月の上松蓊宛書簡で、田中長三郎が招来したペンチヒ文庫（この田中長三郎とペンチヒ文庫のことについてどなたか詳しく教えて下さい）を「古代植物学未熟の世の未熟さを証するにのみ役」にたつ「がらくた」と罵倒した熊楠が、資金的な目処がついて、より実質的な研究所蔵書をつくろうとして行なった大量注文であることは間違いない。
デュローへの注文書の書名や、それ以降の目録で記号を付された書目を、現在われわれが作成中の蔵書目録と比較対照すると、得ようとして得られなかった書物がいかに多いかを知ることができる。目録による注文という方式は、外国郵便がもじどおり郵船によって輸送され、欧州−日本間に１か月以上（行って帰ってであれば２か月以上）の時間的距離があった頃には、決定的に不利であったといえる。ヨーロッパにも数多い競争者に勝って手に入れることができるのは、偶然の篩をくぐり抜けたほんの一部にすぎないのである。熊楠は、すでにロンドン滞在中に「日本一私人の蔵としては一、二なるべく、また珍冊奇篇あることは、決して公立の書庫にもあまりは劣るまじ」と豪語し、また田辺に盤踞してからは蔵の中の蔵書は、巨人の脳髄と一体となってしばしば人を畏怖させたが、目録へ記した記号をいま眺めていると、ありえたかも知れないライブラリーに比して、現実の蔵書が不足の多いものに見えてくる。
熊楠の蔵書には、購入の日付が記載されているものが多い。現在行なっている蔵書調査では、これをできるだけ洩らさず記録するようにつとめている。日記の記載やこれらの目録への書込みとそれを対照することで、ライブラリーの形成史がかなりの程度明らかになるだろう。邸に現存する蔵書は、熊楠の生涯の最後の時点で停止した状態にある。しかし熊楠がしごとをするにあたって日々に接し、依拠していた蔵書は、つねに生成し、発達し、あるいは分裂する生きた蔵書であったはずである。熊楠のような人の蔵書はいつもそのようなものとして意識されなければならない。そのために古書目録は多くのの重要な情報を提供してくれるであろう。しかし同時に、熊楠のような人の蔵書は、単に書物の集積としてでなく、実際に残された集積の外側にあってそれを包含するような「ありえた蔵書」として想定されなければならないのである。そこには抜書のように定着された部分もあれば、定着されなかった部分もある。その集積されなかった蔵書、一つには熊楠がある時点で入手し利用したことが明らかであるにも拘らず、蔵書中に現存しない「失われた蔵書」（これはかなりの数あるのではないだろうか）、もう一つは目録に記号が残された、「望んで得られなかった蔵書」、これらの書目を合わせて初めて南方熊楠蔵書目録は完成されるのではないだろうか。
残念ながら公刊されている日記と、今回調査した古書目録は１点を除いて時期が重なっていない。日記に海外の古書店への言及があるのは、1903年 9月15日の「夜遅く迄フランシス・エドワルズ行状認るが不成」という記事が最初ではないかと思う。以後、フランシス・エドワーズを初め、バーミンガムのジョン・ヒッチマン、エディンバラのウィリアム・ダンロップ、ロンドンのブラウン、ケンブリッジの W・ヘファー・アンド・サンズ、ロンドンのジョン・P・ロイター、バーミンガムの A・J・フェザストンといった古書店が（この順で）日記に登場し、インヴォイスの受け取りや送金、そして書物の到着についての記事が頻繁にあらわれる。とくに受信、発信の記録をたんねんに残すようになってからはひっきりなしにといってもよい。例えば、1912年の11月24日の「発信」の項目には、フランシス・エドワーズ、ヘファー、ダンロップ、フェザストンの 4店に同時に為替を発送したことが記録されている。1913年までの日記のこれほど詳細な記録の中に、デュローが現われないとすれば、デュローとの取引きはこれ以降に開始されたということだろう。上記の業者はいずれもデュローのように動・植物学を専門にしているというわけではなく、13年までの日記に記された書名にも植物学の専門書はほとんど見当らない。デュロー書店とその目録については、上松蓊宛書簡(1919年 8月27日）に「本年一月の ロンドンの Dulan (sic) 会社古本書目に・・・ あり」とふれられている。同じ書簡に「ロンドン、パリは申すに及ばず」とあるパリは 同じく博物学の専門書肆ルシュヴァリエをさしていようから、やはり植物学書の体系的な収集は、南方植物研究所の構想と軌を一にしていたのではないか。
フランシス・エドワーズは、最も早くから取り引きのあった業者である。はたして熊楠 は ロンドンの メリルボンにあったこの店を訪れただろうか。訪れたとしたら、あのちょ っとした体育館のような広さの、吹き抜けの二階まで書棚が壁を埋めつくす圧倒的な光景について何も書き残そうとは思わなかっただろうか。いったいに書物の人である熊楠は、書店というものについてほとんど書き残していない。ロンドン日記には本を買った記事は多いが、どこでどのように買ったか、どこでどのようにその本とめぐりあったかについては何一つ語られない。かろうじて有名なクォリッチ書店の名が見いだされるが、これも注文した本に誤って混じっていた本を返却にいったという記事で、いかにもそっけない。これも上松蓊宛の手紙（1921年4 月14日）の手紙に古書の掘出し自慢もあるが、どうも英国の古書店に冷淡なのが、私にとって不思議である。
アメリカ時代の日記にも書物を本屋で直接に購入した記事は少ないように思う。目録による通信販売を愛用するきっかけになったのはアメリカでの経験かもしれな い。日記には フィラデルフィアの フット書店や、ニュー・ヨークのブートン書店から、通信によって購入したことがしばしば記されている。この時期の目録（ブートン書店）が１冊だけ残されている。なんの変哲もない廉価本の目録であるが、この１冊は熊楠とともにアメリカ、英国を経由してきたわけである。格上げして蔵書のなかに編入してもよいのではないだろうか。
ヘンリ・ソゼラン書店目録 769号に挟まれていた書目の抜粋は、Notes and Queries への投稿下書きの裏を利用している。 2本 (Submarines および Cutting of the Hair as a Preservative against Headache) とも N. & Q.誌の 12s. v.(1919) に掲載されたが、いずれも同誌の12s. iii (1917)における問いへの回答で、比較的早い時期に執筆されていることがわかる。原稿と transcription を付す。(1996. 7. 17)

off the Hair as Preservative against Headache

Under this heading, it may not be entirely amiss to
produce the following passage from the nineteenth book
of 'Han-fei-tsze'（韓非子）, a collection of political disquisitions
of the celebrated Chinese philosopher Han Fei (Killed
B.C. 233):─
"Those who are ignorant of the art of governing are
sure to say, 'We have to gain over the minds of the people.
Now, to gain over the people's mind to govern them,
they need to follow only the advice of the rabble, totally
discarding the wise counsel of I Ying（伊尹）or Kwan Chung（管仲）.
